Au revoir, Adios and Farewell Year 11's!
We recently said goodbye to our wonderful year 11 French and Spanish students. But before they went  we had to say "bye" with a little get together: learning Salsa, making then breaking the Piņata, playing pin the tail, listening to funky house and Spanish music as well as taking pictures and enjoying refreshments.

Have a look at the pictures below

MFL Leaders
For the past three years the school has run the MFL Leaders award, a strand of the Sports Leaders award.  Six to eight Year 10 MFL students were chosen after writing an application, to visit a local feeder primary school and deliver a 10 minute language lesson.  The students worked in pairs and completed a three week training program, starting with topic vocabulary and working towards a whole lesson, complete with resources, in order to confidently deliver the lesson to a Year 5 class on a carousel.  The students really enjoyed the experience, improved their spoken confidence and learned that the best way of learning is to teach it yourself!

French Visit from Notre Dame School
On Thursday 19th March 2009 we held a special assembly involving all of our year 7 students and 90 French year 7's from our partner school in Northern France. A number of activities including role plays, a quiz about France and England and songs in both languages took place.

Trips

City Airport - March 09
Students were given a comprehensive tour of London City Airport in French as well as a presentation. They also did role plays in French based on airport situations and wrote postcards in French. The aim of the visit was to show students how languages can be used in the world of work. It also enabled students to learn new vocabulary and phrases which they will find useful when travelling abroad as well as giving them a unique insight into the life of a busy London airport.

Here are some quotes from students who visited the airport.

We went to London City Airport and went on a tour of the airport. The tour was all in French. We looked at the shops and the security places. It was really good as it helped with my French to see how French was used at an aiport and to see how fast it was. I really enjoyed the day.

We went to London City Airport by DLR from Lewisham on the 11th March. We had a tour led by security guard Paul. He gave us an interesting tour about how customs works and gave us facts about the place, after meeting the police officers who have to ensure that everything is secure. We learnt that 70% of the people who have access to the airports are business men. It was very enjoyable and interesting.

We went to London City Airport on Wednesday 11th March 09. We had a French tour by a man called Paul. We also had the opportunity to have a look at what happens during security procedures. We spoke to police about what they do at the airport and we did a French role play and wrote French postcards for friends and family. I really enjoyed the day as I enjoy going to airports and love planes. I would go back again.

Gredos - June 2006, 2007 & 2008
In June 2006, 2007 and 2008 a selection of Year 9 and Year 10 students studying Spanish spent a week at the Gredos Centre situated in the northwest of Madrid, in the middle of the Gredos National Park, at an altitude of 1,600 metres. The surrounding peaks reach 2,500 metres and are one of the most outstanding areas of natural beauty in Europe. The park abounds in wildlife and has a rich variety of vegetation. It is a part of Spain unknown to most outsiders. You may find more information on the Gredos centre, including some stunning photos at www.gredoscentre.com.

The students relished the fantastic opportunity to practise their Spanish with native speakers at the centre, whilst taking part in a varied program of activities, including archery, a visit to an adventure park, Spanish cooking, taking part in a fashion show, making a television programme, T-shirt painting, a treasure hunt in the local village, karaoke and horse riding in the mountains.  They all had an amazing time and returned with increased confidence in Spanish.
