Curriculum Intent

KS3

Students study one period of Computing each week. We follow the KS3 National Curriculum and ensure that students experience the whole array of topics within it. This may be in the form of more traditional IT based themes or full-on Computer Science ones.

KS4

When students reach their choices for KS4, the Computing department offers two subjects at this stage. GCSE Computer Science, and BTEC Digital Information Technology. Both subjects are taught for three periods per week.

OCR GCSE Computer Science (J277)

This is an academic subject which introduces students many aspects of Computer Science, including:

·         Section 1:

The central processing unit (CPU), computer memory and storage, data representation, wired and wireless networks, network topologies, system security and system software. It also looks at ethical, legal, cultural and environmental concerns associated with computer science

·         Section 2:

Skills and understanding in computational thinking: algorithms, programming techniques, producing robust programs, computational logic and translators

BTEC Digital Information Technology

The BTEC Tech Award in Digital Information Technology is a Level 2 digital qualification that gives students a real insight into the modern fundamentals of IT. This is more of a vocational subject than Computer Science.

  • Ideal for learners pursuing a career in IT who wish to gain a broad taste of digital skills.
  • Teach content such as UI design, cyber security, databases and more.
  • Students can progress to further education qualifications such as BTEC Level 3 Nationals or A levels.
